The Value of Psychological Treatment or Rethinking Europe

The Value of Psychological Treatment: The Collected Papers of Nicholas A. Cummings, Vol. 1

Author: J Lawrence Thomas

Spanning the years from 1967 to 1997, the papers contained in this volume stand together as a testament to the brilliance and foresight of one man, Dr. Nicholas A. Cummings, a past president of the American Psychological Association.

In 30 years, Cummings has had a lot to say. But more important than the profile of him that emerges is the profile that emerges of the field of psychotherapy. Through the eyes and words of this provocative pioneer, the current turmoil surrounding the delivery of mental health care services comes into sharp focus. One of topics on which Cummings has written extensively is the positioning of mental health care as a linchpin in the provision of health care in general.

In this book, the editors have gathered some of Cummings' most original and significant works. And they have enticed him to provide updates on those pieces. For all concerned about the future of health care in this country--whether from the perspective of provider or administrator--this volume will prove essential reading.

Rethinking Europe: Social Theory and the Implications of Europeanization

Author: Gerard Delanty

"Rethinking Europe broadens the terms of the debate on Europeanization, conventionally limited to the supersession of the nation-state by a supra-national authority and the changes within member states consequent upon EU membership." Dominant approaches to the transformation of Europe ignore contemporary social theory interpretations of the nature and dynamics of social change. Delanty and Rumford argue that we need a theory of society in order to understand Europeanization. In doing so the book advances the case that Europeanization should be theorized in terms of globalization, major social transformations that are not exclusively spear-headed by the EU and the wider context of the transformation of modernity.
